Victoria Street is known to many people as Little Vietnam, and Quan 88 is Vietnamese-Chinese. It’s not fancy – but its great value and is the true spirit of Victoria Street before the fancy cafes and bars moved in.

Get your party on with these loud, raucous and in-your-face flavors of Southeast Asia. Since opening in 2011 (and renovating in 2016), it remains one of Melbourne’s favorites. The wine list is Australian only, but watch out – their no reservations policy can mean long queues. You can always wait at the custom built ‘waiting bar’ Go-Go, just around the corner.

Want the best Vietnamese food outside of Vietnam? People will tell you to go to Footscray or Richmond, but they are missing out on Jerry Mai’s exceptional offering. Jerry and her brother David have done fine dining over the years and have now elected to serve good honest pho (noodle soup), banh mi (baguette sandwiches) and nem (rice paper rolls) in a cafeteria. Everything is ethically sourced and under AUD 15. It’s not glamorous, but the food is excellent.

Madame Brussels

A lot of fun, this bar is themed as an English croquet club with fake grass and wrought iron furniture inside and a huge 19th century style al fresco terrace outside. The menu tells the story of its namesake, a 19th century madam in Melbourne who had most of the politicians in her pocket as customers. Order drinks by the jug – they all have cheeky names such as a Pimm’s cocktail called ‘Madame’s DD Cup’.

We’ve already spilled the beans on the best places to eat in the Melbourne’s laneways, but there’s plenty more on tap if you’re heading off the main thoroughfares. Some of the city’s best bars are hidden back here, so get back to those laneways and get drinking at the best bars in Melbourne!

Curtin House

This 1922 building has a colorful history, but was ‘developed’ in 2003 into what it is today. It’s full of venues, making it Melbourne’s vertical laneway. First floor is Cookie – a Thai restaurant and beer bar with many taps. Second floor is The Toff in Town, a live music venue and wine bar where you can sit in old style train carriages. The third floor hosts a changing range of quirky retail stores. The fourth and fifth floors have a Kung Fu academy, small offices and apartments and then a Mexican restaurant, Mesa Verde, on level 6. The most popular place is the rooftop, which hosts a bar that is open every day of the year with a fabulous view, a burger shack and al fresco cinema during the summer months.

A small unpretentious bar, Meyers Place is both located in and named after a great eating and drinking laneway in Melbourne’s city center. It stays open late, which is lucky because one can easily while away a few rounds here.

Sun Moth Canteen & Bar

A beautiful hangout in a beautiful laneway, Sun Moth Canteen is an oasis to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The fit out is pale wood, clean lines and plants. The menu is short, but nutritious, and they will feed you three meals per day. The highlight is the drinks list with local producers of natural wines and spirits as well. What do Australian vodka, gin and whisky taste like? You’ll find out here.

Union Electric

Opened in 2015, this is an eloquent take on the Melbourne laneway bar. They’ve taken a small space and fit it out to create a sense of casual sophistication. The drinks menu highlights local producers and fun cocktails, like the Charlie Chaplin No 3 with plum shrub syrup, gin and prosecco. It’s in the heart of Chinatown (although it doesn’t feel like it), so if you get peckish, the dumpling house next door will bring you some dim sum.

Industry Beans

While this roastery emphasizes its specialty coffee sourcing and brewing, you will definitely want to pair your flat white with its smashed avocado. They use an entire avocado (!!!) topped with creamy chevre and microherbs on sourdough. Then they turn it up to 11 by serving it with charred lemon and green tea sea salt. No wonder their brunch is on the world’s top 100 list…

The Kettle Black


Kettle Black keeps it minimal with its “seasonal avocado”. Paired with fresh-baked toast, citrus (usually in the form of lime) and local kelp salt, half of the creamy fruit (sourced from Barham Avocados) is served in its peel. It’s the simple things, really, that let the avocado shine.

The avocado toast here is served on seeded bread, with marinated heirloom cherry tomatoes, basil oil and BURRATA MOZZARELLA. Double the creamy goodness = double the brunch happiness. There’s just so much avocado to love here. “The Avo” tossed with feta, mint, chili and lemon and serve it up on organic sourdough – although they can sub in almond feta and gluten-free sourdough because those with dietary restrictions should still get to brunch like champions.

Coffee roaster Small Batch’s philosophy is: “We believe coffee can be better”. Their CBD café ‘Filter by Small Batch’ takes a ‘cellar door’ approach to coffee. Come in, ask questions and drink coffee from around the world. It’s brewed skillfully and roasted to get the most out of the bean. This style of coffee is akin to drinking tea, but once your palate adjusts, you’ll taste more of what the farmer intended you to.

Industry Beans

Located in the backstreets of Fitzroy, Industry Beans has a coffee roaster up the back, a little courtyard up the front and are known for playing with coffee in food (coffee-dusted fried chicken and coffee set into caviar are two menu features). Not everything is that avant-garde, but it is all excellent.

These guys are all about quality coffee. In fact, that’s all they do. You cannot get tea or hot chocolate at their cafes. They roast very light, so anyone that doesn’t like coffee because it’s too bitter may like to try coffee at Market Lane. The roastery leads the list here, but they have a few locations around town:

These guys have a knack for making great coffee (and hot choc) in small café spaces. Their tiny space known as Traveller leads the list, but they have a number of locations around the city. The exception is their roasting facility (Carlton address) where you can also watch the roasting happen- ing through a glass window and attend free coffee appreciation tastings (known as ‘cuppings’) twice a week.
